Proffee Is Trending On TikTok. Is It Actually Good For You?
Proffee is a new health trend on TikTok that involves drinking a blend of protein and coffee. The trend, which has amassed millions of views on TikTok, is being offered up as a healthier alternative to specialty coffee drinks (via Healthline). Many TikTok videos show users mixing cold brew or iced coffee with a protein shake in a glass jar to create a creamy and protein-packed caffeinated beverage. However, experts at Healthline say that any type of coffee or liquid and powdered protein can be used. But why exactly are people drinking this in the first place?
As it turns out, TikTok users are drinking proffee in order to boost energy and performance, add more protein to their diet, and promote weight loss. While drinking coffee can certainly improve your energy levels and consuming protein shakes can help increase your overall protein intake, experts are still skeptical of the beverage's purported benefits.
Drawbacks to drinking proffee
There are some notable drawbacks to drinking proffee. According to Byrdie, proffee can be rather high in sugar, fat, and calories, especially when using protein shakes or mixing in syrups and creamers to add sweetness to the drink. "This is not healthy, and at this point is more like a blended candy bar," certified trainer, and registered dietitian, Jamie Hickey, told Byrdie. That's why Hickey recommends adding up to two scoops of organic protein powder to an eight-ounce glass of iced black coffee instead.
It's also important to make sure that you're not consuming too much caffeine. Excessive caffeine consumption can interfere with the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals and even disrupt your circadian rhythm, which can lead to interruption in your sleep. And while a low-calorie and low-sugar version of proffee could potentially help people lose weight, experts recommend sticking to proven weight loss methods, like engaging in regular exercise and maintaining a healthy and well-balanced diet.
