What Taking Melatonin Every Night Does To Your Face
By AGNES ERICKSON
Melatonin is a naturally produced hormone that helps the body know when it is time to sleep and when it is time to wake up, and melatonin supplements are commonly known to aid sleep. It turns out melatonin can also help with skin issues such as fighting free radicals, pollution, and UV rays.
Melatonin can help antioxidants fight free radicals and is more effective than the more well-known vitamins C and E. In addition to assisting antioxidant enzyme production, melatonin helps “prevent sun damage and pollution as well as protects collagen in the second layer of the skin,” according to dermatologist Ted Lain, M.D.
Melatonin and its benefits to the skin are no longer a secret, as topical masks and other skin products have become popular, including melatonin-based concoctions. When applied topically, there is no risk of the side effects that may arise from taking it orally, such as headaches, dizziness, and nausea.
