Disneyland Is Stepping Up Against COVID-19 In A Surprising Way
It feels like nothing can surprise us in the news these days, but we must admit we were a bit amazed to hear that the fight against the pandemic has checked in to "The Happiest Place on Earth." ABC 7 reports that Orange County officials have recently announced that Disneyland, currently closed to visitors, is set to be a massive COVID-19 vaccination site. Supervisor Andrew Do, acting chairman of the Board of Supervisors for the company, shares with the public how Disney is doing its part. "The Disneyland Resort, the largest employer in the heart of Orange County, has stepped up to host the county's first Super POD site — undertaking a monumental task in our vaccination distribution process," he says.
Disney is the first of five planned "Super POD" sites to be set up in Orange County, California. A Super POD, which stands for Super Point-of-Dispensing, is a site set up that has the ability to dispense thousands of vaccinations per day, explains a County of Orange press release.
Orange County is an area that has been devastated by the virus
Supervisor Doug Chaffee states in the County of Orange press release, "I'm proud to have Disneyland Resorts and the City of Anaheim, both in my Fourth District, be the first of the Super POD sites in Orange County," he says. "Residents in my district have been highly impacted by COVID-19. These Super PODs are absolutely critical in stopping this deadly virus." Orange County is an area that has been particularly devastated by the virus, registering over 190,000 positive COVID-19 cases and 2,100 deaths, states CNN.
Officials have told CNN that further Super POD sites in Orange County will soon be announced after agreements are finalized. Future mass vaccination sites around California are planned to be hosted in Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium, San Diego's Petco Park, and Sacramento's Cal Expo. Here's to hoping the magic of Disney and the quick dispensing of vaccinations will be enough to quiet down this ongoing pandemic.
