The Popular Cheese That Has More Protein Than An Egg

Protein is an essential part of any diet. Not only is it important for muscles and bone health, but it keeps you feeling full longer, therefore possibly reducing snacking. It also supports your metabolism, may lower blood pressure, and helps the body recover if it's been injured in any way.

However, when we think about eating enough protein, we tend to think of meat and eggs and don't really expand the idea that there could be something that has an even higher protein content. Cheese lovers, brace yourself for some exciting news: An ounce of cheddar cheese has more protein than an egg. That's right; it isn't just delicious — cheese is also good for you, despite what you may have previously thought.

With almost 7 grams of protein per ounce, if you're looking to add more protein to your diet, then cheddar cheese just might be the route you want to take. While there are cheeses with higher protein content, for example, Parmesan has 10 grams and Romano has 9 grams of protein per ounce, cheddar is a bit more accessible for a lot of people. Not just because it doesn't have the excessively strong taste and dubious texture of Parmesan and Romano but because you can pretty much find it anywhere where food is sold.

Other benefits of cheddar besides its protein

In addition to its high protein count, cheddar is also a great source of calcium, making it a key player in bone health. It also contains vitamins A and K, as well as iron, and can help lower cholesterol. According to a 2011 study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, cheese lowers "bad" (LDL) cholesterol. While this might seem a bit odd considering how much saturated fat is in cheese, the study found that this factor didn't increase LDL cholesterol levels. The researchers surmised the reason could be because of the high amounts of calcium in cheese and the fact that it's, for lack of more eloquent wording, ultimately pooped out.

Cheddar cheese is also fantastic for oral health. Not only does the protein keep teeth strong and healthy, minimizing chances of potential tooth decay, but it restores pH levels in the mouth. A 2013 study published in General Dentistry found that when adolescents (ages 12 to 15) were given yogurt, milk, or cheddar cheese to consume, the former two products resulted in no changes in the pH balance of the mouth, whereas for those who had cheese, the pH balance increased. The takeaway? When it comes to dairy products, cheese has the strongest anticariogenic properties, meaning it contains components that prevent tooth decay and microbial growth.

If that weren't enough to inspire you to eat more cheese, a 2005 study by the British Cheese Board found that 3 ounces of cheese before bed made for more restful nights and minimized nightmares in 72% of the respondents. However, it should be kept in mind that this study was poorly constructed, never published in a peer-reviewed journal, and likely biased (per BBC). Nevertheless, Cheddar cheese does bring a lot of interesting benefits to the table.

How to work more cheddar into your diet

One of the best parts about cheddar cheese is that it's mild enough that it can easily be enjoyed alone in cubes or slices, and on crackers, melba toast, bread, or similar food products. Cheddar cheese is delicious in biscuits, dips, macaroni and cheese, potatoes au gratin, grilled cheese sandwiches, and soups. If you want to pair your cheddar with healthier options, cauliflower mac and cheese is great for when you're craving cozy, comfort food, as is a cheddar cheese and veggie omelet. Also, cheese and fruit, like grapes, dates, or apples make for a yummy snack, and cheddar cheese also works well in salads — both savory and sweet ones.

If you want to share the benefits of cheddar cheese with friends and family, whether you're hosting a gathering or attending one, offer to be in charge of the charcuterie board. Fill that board with not just meats, fruits, and a variety of nuts, but loads of different kinds of cheeses too, including cheddar. Unlike some cheeses, cheddar can be included in many different kinds of meals and snacks — it melts perfectly, after all — so don't be afraid to experiment with new recipes and ideas, and inject your life with more cheddar.
